Education is one of the best ways to honor Hispanic Americans, both during Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the year.

National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated September 15-October 15, is an annual period for recognizing and honoring Hispanic culture and the historic and ongoing contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Dedicating time to celebrate Hispanic heritage is beneficial both to Hispanic Americans and the broader community. But, we should all remember to plan continued learning, recognition and celebrations throughout the year.

How should you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans?

Education is one of the best ways to honor Hispanic Americans, both within Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the year. Education should intentionally help employees understand Hispanic history and the Hispanic culture that exists today. In addition to teaching about Hispanic heritage, lessons from people within the Hispanic and Latino/a/x communities can create greater acceptance and understanding by personalizing the content and stories.

What are the benefits of creating greater awareness about Hispanic heritage?

According to 2020 U.S. Census data, more than 62 million people in the U.S. are Hispanic or Latino, and almost 34 million people consider themselves to be “multiracial.” Both of these groups are growing quickly.

Understanding Hispanic heritage, including the many cultures and multiple languages that get lumped into “Hispanic” is an important step in creating an inclusive community that helps everyone feel a sense of belonging.
