How to generate conversations around learning at work

When you surprise employees with excellent instructors (real people sharing real-life stories and leadership lessons in an impactful way), learning becomes delightful.

Companies have been having lunch-and-learns for years.

Around 11am, the office starts buzzing...

  • Is it pizza?
  • Oooh, I heard Thai food.
  • No! I hope it’s those poke bowls we had last month!

If that sounds familiar to you, you’re not alone. And now you're probably a little hungry! But let’s be clear: that is 100% an office buzz… about the lunch!

We need to start generating a buzz around learning at work!

Recently, we have been chatting with various people, L&D, and operations experts, and there is a common theme about their desire to spice up learning initiatives for their teams. But with interest comes caution:

  • “It can’t be too corporate.”
  • “We can’t have my employees saying, ‘Why did you make me take that training???’”
  • “Our employees always give me a hard time: oh, another HR training...here we go.”

Usually, we laugh together when team leaders share these sentiments, because we’ve all been there. We’ve been on both the thankless planning and multi-tasking audience sides when we can’t stop checking our emails, hoping something urgent calls us out of the meeting.

It’s time to make learning impactful again.

Imagine hearing this prior to your corporate training sessions:

  • “OMG! Did you hear so and so is teaching us?!”
  • “I watched her TED talk, and I have so many questions I want to ask her!”
  • “Ahhh! I just finished his book. I can’t believe he’s coming to share more insights. Fan boying over here.”
