In May, Hamutal Oren-Fox, an esteemed expert and the Chief People Officer at Venn City, sat down with Jason Lavender, the Co-Founder and CEO of Electives. In her People Developing People interview, Trent shared his passion for building high-performing organizations.
During this segment, Hamutal shares how, when employees can invest something from themselves in the organization, that investment creates engagement.
Read the transcript:
Hamutal: Engagement is created when people have the opportunity to invest something from themselves in the organization, as opposed to our thoughts of having it the opposite way around.
Hamutal: For years and years and years and years, I would come up with “hey there's a new training plan” and “there's a new training program” and “let’s do this fun stuff” and “let’s bring this lecture” and “let’s bring this person” and “let’s do a mentorship program” and “we’ll teach you and we’ll give you.” “Oh that’s not enough? Don’t worry, I’ll give you more and I’ll give you more and I’ll give you more and I’ll give you more.”
Hamutal: And the truth is, that when you find a way to have people take full accountability on their own development and teach you as an organization what they need – and it's very different for every individual – what they need in order to develop themselves and have them participate in actually creating that, then they become engaged. Then they become committed. Then they develop themselves because it's very, very accurate to what their needs are.
Hamutal: I do believe that the secret sauce there is: how do we help people tailor their own learning experience? How do we give them a lot of options out there, but also be open to options that we didn’t think about? Really enable people to come and say, "okay, this is what I need in order to develop myself, this is what I want"—to be very direct to teach people not to expect other their managers or their HR or anyone else to read their minds.
