How do I fix low employee engagement?

Employees seem less engaged and motivated than they used to be. Burnout is high, and everyone is exhausted. For reference, we're hybrid in location and hours. We believe in letting people work when and where they want. Perhaps that's the problem. The connections between employees seem weaker than in the past, but we want to maintain flexibility.

Answer:

Strategies to improve employee engagement

Fixing low employee engagement can feel like solving a complex puzzle, especially in a hybrid work environment where maintaining strong connections can be challenging. Here are some strategies to help boost engagement and reduce burnout while preserving your flexible work culture:

1. Strengthen communication channels

Effective communication is the foundation of a cohesive and engaged team. Here are some ways to strengthen communication channels:

  • Regular check-ins: Schedule consistent, informal check-ins with team members. These can be quick daily stand-ups or weekly one-on-ones.
  • Open forums: Host open forums or "ask me anything" sessions where employees can voice concerns and suggest improvements.
  • Feedback loops: Implement a structured feedback system where employees can share their thoughts on processes and culture.

2. Foster a sense of community

Building a solid community promotes collaboration and a sense of belonging. Encourage a sense of community with these ideas:

  • Virtual social events: Organize virtual coffee breaks, game nights or team-building activities to nurture relationships.
  • Buddy system: Pair employees from different departments for casual catch-ups to encourage cross-team connections.
  • Shared goals: Promote team projects or challenges that require collaboration, helping everyone feel part of a bigger mission.

3. Enhance employee wellbeing

Prioritizing wellbeing helps employees stay healthy, focused and motivated. Here are three ways you can enhance employee wellbeing:

  • Flexible wellness programs: Offer inclusive wellness initiatives like virtual yoga, meditation sessions or fitness challenges that employees can join at their convenience.
  • Mental health support: Provide access to mental health resources, including counseling services and stress management workshops.
  • Encourage time off: Actively encourage employees to take their full vacation days and consider implementing "mental health days."

4. Recognize + reward efforts

Recognition and rewards are essential for motivating employees. Recognize and reward efforts with acknowledgment and incentives:

  • Acknowledgment: Regularly recognize and celebrate employee achievements, both big and small. A simple shoutout during a meeting or a thank-you note can go a long way.
  • Incentives: Offer meaningful rewards such as extra time off, gift cards or professional development opportunities for outstanding performance.

5. Create opportunities for growth

Growth helps employees see a future within the organization and stay engaged. Here are three ways to create growth opportunities:

  • Career development plans: Work with employees to create personalized development plans that align with their career aspirations.
  • Training + development: Provide access to learning resources, like Electives Membership, empowering employees to turn learning catalysts into growth opportunities.
  • Mentorship programs: Establish mentorship programs where experienced employees can guide and support their peers.

Remember, maintaining flexibility doesn’t have to come at the cost of engagement. You can reinvigorate your team's motivation and connection without compromising the freedom they value. Stay resilient and adaptable, and your employees will follow suit.
