According to a recent Gallup survey, employee engagement in the U.S. has stagnated, with only 33% of employees feeling genuinely engaged.

Read on for the key findings and actionable insights to help you revitalize your teams and create a thriving work environment.

Understanding the employee engagement landscape in 2024

Employee engagement stands at 33%, a slight decline from previous years. However, only 16% of workers are disengaged workers. This is also down from prior years.

According to Gallup, those disengaged workers cause a staggering $1.9 trillion in lost productivity.

The impact of hybrid work on employee engagement

With 29% of employees working fully remotely and 52% adopting a hybrid model, the workplace has significantly shifted.

Leaders must adapt to the new normal to foster a sense of connection and purpose.

  • Hybrid, remote and on-site employees have all experienced a decline in clarity of expectations.
  • However, hybrid and remote workers experienced double the decline in role clarity compared to on-site workers.

Role clarity is fundamental to employee engagement

The most critical employee engagement element is knowing what is expected.

Gallup's meta-analysis emphasizes the link between role clarity and productivity, employee retention, safety and customer engagement.

  • Employee turnover during the great resignation led to team restructuring.
  • According to Gallup, 70% of managers need formal training on leading hybrid teams.

People leaders should take these 4 steps to boost employee engagement:

  • Address the needs of disengaged employees: Invest in targeted engagement strategies and provide additional support for remote and hybrid workers.
  • Prioritize role clarity in training and development programs: Implement weekly conversations between managers and team members.
  • Address team restructuring challenges: Provide resources and support for employees handling increased responsibilities, and leverage resources to reduce lost productivity.
  • Offer holistic training: Focus on team-building activities, remote culture, modern manager training, communication skills and high-performance culture training.

Charting a course for an engaged + resilient workforce

The 2024 Gallup insights provide a roadmap for People leaders in the dynamic landscape of employee engagement. Organizations that foster a culture of continuous learning and development by addressing role clarity, adapting to the challenges of hybrid work and prioritizing engagement strategies are the ones that will win.
