In June, people leader Shimrit (Shim) Paley Markette, the Chief People Officer of Second Nature.sat down with Jason Lavender, the Co-Founder and CEO of Electives. In her People Developing People interview, Shim shared her expertise and valuable insights on developing people, building strong communities and embracing the power of remote work.

During this segment, Shim talks about how positive employee experiences are beneficial to all employees.

Read the transcript:

Shim: I think that a culture of developing people really starts from the top down when the leadership is bought in – when the leadership prioritizes learning. I've had leaders who say, "Hey, you know, one day a month or one day every other week, we're going to dedicate a full day to learning." Or they themselves participate in team hackathons. They themselves are the champions of reading and learning, going out and networking and utilizing some of the platforms we offer.

Shim: I also think that when it becomes part of this like management contract, when we go to our managers and say, "This is the expectation. Our expectation is that you are going to develop from within. You are going to be able to promote from within. You are going to be able to retain your employees."

Shim: When we go to our employees and we survey them and ask "do you feel like your manager is developing you?" and they say yes, then they just talk about the positive outcomes of that – that flywheel effect that becomes a part of the performance review. That is what we look for in management. That's what we look for in leadership and it becomes a non-negotiable—it's on the KPI  list and it's something that the business truly values.
