It’s time to review our collaboration processes and styles and make long-term enhancements to accommodate long-term remote work.

Remote work is nothing new, but no one expected everyone to suddenly start working from home when the global pandemic struck in 2020. Companies reactively changed their workstyles to accommodate remote workers. Three years later, it’s time to review our collaboration processes and styles and make long-term enhancements.

Collaboration is vital for every team – no matter where individuals work. However, collaboration can be challenging (especially when employees are separated by time, language and geography). Building processes to accommodate organizational collaboration is now vital for long-term success.

Here are 6 ways to enhance remote team collaboration in your organization.

1. Set individual and team goals.

Keep your employees motivated by defining individual goals that align with team objectives. The clarity these goals provide brings individuals certainty and peace of mind. Likewise, achieving a team goal together produces a reason to celebrate and connect as a team.

2. Emphasize communication.

Strong communication practices are essential for effective collaboration – especially for remote workforces. After all, when you cannot see what others are doing or overhear conversations, it becomes more important to share updates regularly.

3. Implement collaboration technology.

Communication, collaboration and project management tools can be beneficial in keeping people on the same page. Determine your needs before researching the best tools, and invest upfront in building it out to accommodate your unique requirements.

4. Hold regular team check-ins.

Remote employees may feel isolated due to a lack of interaction with teammates, which can negatively impact collaboration. Encourage your people managers to schedule regular one-on-ones and team meetings to bring people together for bonding, project updates and collaboration.

5. Make accommodations for people with unique needs.

Everyone is unique, but some of your employees likely have specific needs or accommodations that can dramatically improve their collaboration abilities. Make sure you’ve created a safe space to talk about diversity, including disabilities and neurodivergence, so your people managers and your employees are prepared to offer support and accommodations when appropriate.

6. Schedule employee engagement and team-building activities.

An engaged workforce is a productive workforce. When teams are together in an office, organizing a team lunch or after-work drinks is easy. But team bonding doesn’t have to feel harder for remote workforces. Learning together is a great way to grow and connect.
