What you will learn:
It would be an understatement to say the past few years have been challenging. A terrifying 24-hour news cycle and work from home has us more overwhelmed and burned out than ever before. We are all doing our best to just hold it together. A concerning fact is that only 40% of employees report stress to their employer. Companies are trying everything from flexible schedules to 4 day workweeks to help employees. Every company has retention top of mind and finds themself asking the following question. How do you help employees who either think they don’t need it or are afraid to say something?
Ryan Johansen was climbing the corporate ladder at a fast moving startup only to end up checking himself into a hospital because of a mental breakdown caused by workplace stress. After going to a dark place with mental health, Ryan discovered putting your mental health first can actually have major career benefits. In this elective, Ryan will share his story of dealing with stress and burnout firsthand. Students will be introduced to strategies and concepts they can apply to reduce stress and improve productivity. Rather than tell an inspirational story followed by the usual “now what?”, this Elective is packed with practical and easy to implement strategies to manage stress and improve productivity.
After this elective, employees will leave with:
-A deeper understanding of what stress is and how to better manage it
-Reduced feelings of being overwhelmed by their workload and challenging events
-Simple, practical techniques they can easily apply in everyday situations to reduce stress
About the instructor:
TLDR: I made it my personal mission to find the answer to the question ”How can I be highly productive and work less hours?” My style covers the intersection of stress reduction and increasing productivity.
In 2018 I found myself in a difficult position. I received the promotion I worked hard for, leading my own team at a fast-paced startup. My old mentality of “work more hours and give it your all” started to fail.I was miserable, suffering from panic attacks and questioning my ability. Every day felt like a challenge I couldn’t overcome, and I started to feel hopeless.
So I made the hardest and most humbling decision of my life. I got help. I checked myself into a hospital for a few days and began truly working on myself. It helped, but I knew I needed more, as I checked out, I left with one question burning inside me “what can I do to feel better?”
I read every book I could get my hands on, took courses, and talked to others with a similar experience and was determined to come back stronger than ever. What I learned is that we have more control of our mental state than we might believe. There are many scientifically validated techniques for stress reduction that are simple, free and easy to apply to your daily routine.
My most interesting discovery is that by putting your mental wellbeing first, it can lead to you being more productive. I was able to exceed my goals at work, get another promotion, build a passion project, and live a more meaningful life. My goal is to help others learn how to improve their mental states and lead happier and more productive lives.
I offer guided workshops and courses for companies and individuals that help people reduce their stress and live a better quality of life.
