What you will learn:
In this follow up to "Leadership is Allyship," we examine why supporting colleagues from underrepresented groups can at times feel scary, why we avoid doing it, and what to do about it. We'll talk about how to overcome the (very real and very understandable) fears associated with speaking up for our underrepresented colleagues, and importantly, how to repair, recover, and restore when (not if!) we mess up. Allyship is hard work. But when you choose to be an ally, you are choosing to dismantle and resist the systems of oppression that unfairly strengthen some people's voices at the expense of others. So, it's not easy. You have to speak on your own behalf (not others') and understand the difference between performative allyship and authentic allyship. You'll need to understand your motivations and intentions for being an ally, and you'll need to build strong partnerships with a diverse range of people so that your speaking up is understood for its intent. In this Elective, you will begin to unpack your role as an ally and feel prepared to take the leap to inclusive leadership.
