More than one in four transgender people report having lost a job due to transphobia and bias, and more than three-fourths have experienced some form of discrimination at work. An Introduction to Transgender Inclusion

Thanks again for cruising through all that information during our session about Why Pronouns Matter! As promised, sending some follow-up resources so that your learning continues. Remember, language evolves and we have to evolve with it so don’t hold on too tightly to any of the specific terms/guidance.

Gender identity is different from sex assigned at birth and sexual orientation.

Gender identity is an individual’s personal sense of being male, female, both, or neither. Everyone has a gender identity!

For transgender people, there is a misalignment between the sex the were assigned at birth and their gender identity.

Many folks who identify as transgender and/or non binary will decide use a new name and pronouns that better align with their gender identity & expression.

I've included national organizations here, as well as trans rights organizations in states that are currently putting forth (or have already signed into law) anti-trans legislation.

Transgender Education Network of Texas or TENT is an organization dedicated to furthering gender diverse equality in Texas. We work to accomplish this through education and networking in both public and private forums. Through our efforts we strive to halt discrimination through social, legislative, and corporate education.

Trans Lifeline is a grassroots hotline and microgrants 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering direct emotional and financial support to trans people in crisis – for the trans community, by the trans community.

Using a person’s pronouns and chosen name, especially in the workplace, is a sign of respect.

When we use a person's pronouns and chosen name appropriately, we are acknowledging and affirming their identity as valid.

Doing this consistently creates space for experiences and identities outside of the gender binary. Over time, this practice helps to cultivate a safer, more affirming work environment for people of all genders!

Remember: It’s not possible to determine which pronouns a person uses just by looking at them or their name. Never assume! If you’re unsure, politely ask “What pronouns do you use?”

Northwest Arkansas Equality is a nonprofit organization providing programming, education, and advocacy to serve, connect, and empower the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. We provide free HIV/STI testing services, various support groups, resources, and social and community outreach events.

The Knights and Orchids Society  provides affirming STD/STI testing, reproductive care, and Trans-Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) care. We also provide behavioral support services and direct support assistance in a financial or housing crisis.Our client care network currently extends throughout Alabama, and we are actively expanding our reach to encompass the entire Southeastern region of the US.

Why Pronouns Matter

Julian Damore is a seasoned People Operations professional and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) advocate who has worked in both startups and large organizations in the finance, cybersecurity, and marketing operations sectors.

After years of struggling with their gender identity, Julian came out as transgender at the age of 24. Transitioning in the workplace came with extensive challenges, and through this experience, they developed a commitment to educating others about the nuances of gender identity, the importance of pronouns, and inclusive language in the workplace and beyond. Through sharing their story with others, Julian has also discovered a talent for workshop design and facilitation.

Julian identifies as both queer and non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. In their free time, they enjoy long-distance backpacking and spending time with their partner and rescue dog.
