What you will learn:
It can sometimes feel like the terminology around gender is changing every day. Every time you read or watch the news, there's a new topic or debate-- some of which are very controversial. This course will provide the basic concepts and terminology to help understand what gender is, how it structures society, why it is such a hot-button issue, and how to engage in meaningful conversation about gender--especially with our youth. Participants will leave this session with the language and conceptual framework to help them to understand and discuss gender throughout their everyday lives.
About the instructor:
Alex Myers teaches English at Phillips Exeter Academy. Since coming out as transgender in 1995, he has worked with schools to help them support transgender students and become more gender inclusive. Alex is also a novelist whose works explore gender, identity, and history. His novels include Revolutionary, Continental Divide, and The Story of Silence.
His most recent book, Supporting Transgender Students, is a guide to help schools learn the basics of what gender is and why it matters in education. Drawing on his 25 years of experience working with schools and transgender students, this book considers how transgender and gender non-conforming youth experience the classroom, the playing field, and other school contexts. Alex is now expanding his lessons and stories beyond schools and into the work place.
