What you will learn:
In 2004, Wendy Shanker’s landmark book The Fat Girl’s Guide to Life was published to international acclaim. Her wit, insight, and dismantling of shame around the word “fat” ushered in a new era of acceptance and understanding about body image, and the influence it has over our lives. Two decades later, Wendy is no longer a Fat Girl…she’s a Fat Woman, and she still has plenty to say about the subject.
In this Elective Wendy will assess what’s changed about body image in the 21st century; culturally, financially, scientifically and Lizzo-ly – and what hasn’t. She’ll explore the ways social media, marketing, and evolving gender roles impact body image. She’ll reveal personal changes in her own life that have shifted her self image (pregnancy/parenting, age, and a health issue that changed everything). And she’ll invite the audience to share their own stories and experiences, encouraging them to participate in exercises that will leave them feeling optimistic and empowered about our bodies, our selves, and our future.
